One of the biggest challenges that my clients face is constantly creating new content that is relevant. Next on the list is usually having the skills and resources to create imagery and/or captions that will speak to their ideal client. Then the good old PITA – time!
The conversation normally goes something like this:
‘I struggle to know what to post and be able to (either create imagery/videos or captions/copy) all the time. I sit and think about it, then I get busy and before you know it 2 days have passed and I haven’t posted and still don’t know what to post’
The basis for feeling like this comes from the fact that most people in business are not born creators of digital content, you are the expert at YOUR business. BUT living in an age of the entrepreneur means that business owners – particularly start-ups and small business – have to wear all the hats.
You need to be a pro at you own job, look after the books, be a marketing wizz, manage all the admin, create content for your channels, be a customer service queen, networking legend and new business acquisition master.
Oh and if you get a chance to manage your own home, work out, look immaculate, be a unicorn mum and wife/partner extraordinaire.
NO WONDER women these days are under pressure! Geez!
But I digress back to creating content.
I am going to give you some real and useful strategies to help you keep on top of your content creation PLUS some advice that will help you overcome those pesky inner voices that say ‘I am no good at this’
First up the elephant in the room!
Your ability to create content is hindered by one contributing factor……your own beliefs. Bet you didn’t think I would say that!
What I mean by that is as a woman who has decided that she will not conform to the norm and go get what most consider a ‘real job’ you have decided to turn a passion into a paycheck. Am I right?
You started your business because somewhere deep inside you, you have a talent for something that you are passionate about. Perhaps you have done some study or worked for an employer in this field, or maybe you have just found something you love and doing anything else would destroy your soul. Now you want to leverage off that and make money from it.
My first task for you to do is ‘Harness Your Why’.
What is it about your business that makes you get out of bed and puts a fire in your belly?
What intimate part of you is in that business?
How much of that story are you prepared to show people?
Are you prepared that some people may not identify with all of that?
Are you prepared to keep going anyway because you WILL find your people?
I started my business because I have a passion for social media and an expertise in coaching.
My burning desire is to help woman realise their true potential through harnessing their inner personal brand and show that through their marketing. To have the confidence to do what they desire not what society says they should do and most of all own their voice!
The intimate part of me that is in this business is my ability to be real. I am not a naturally confident person, I am always second guessing myself. BUT I want people to know that even the ‘professionals’ are human. Everyone is just human right? I may know a crapload about socials but you probably know a crapload about heaps of things I don’t. We are all just people exchanging value, no one is better than the other.
Does everyone agree with my methods, decisions or message? NO!
Are they my people? NO!
The ones that are are my clients that get results from what I teach them. THEY are what makes it all worth it.
So whenever you are coming up against a challenge or you have that pesky self-doubt with your content and/or business ask yourself:
Where does this doubt come from?
Is there some limiting belief I need to clear, forgive and move on from?
What can I do to reframe this in a more productive, loving and positive way?
Then move forward and do what you need to even if it scares you!
Sharing your why
This can be the MOST challenging for people but I have some simple strategies that will help you be able to do this in a way that you feel comfortable with.
Pick the parts of you that you are prepared to share – not all of them just the parts you want that will inspire your followers and potential followers to embrace you and your business.
Share them in a way that makes them feel that you understand them. You want people to say ‘She really gets me I like her’ (remember people do business with those they know, like and trust)
When you are sharing about your product, service or even just a funny quote what is it about all of this that lights you up.
For example, You love this product because it is locally handmade and you have a passion for supporting local people.
Or maybe it is something scarier than that. Maybe it comes from something that shifted your life entirely in a massive way, perhaps it is personal. THAT can be a challenge to harness and share right?
But think what if you could affect one person in a positive way? What if one person could be inspired by your story and it changes things for them?
Isn’t that worth more than 10,000 followers who are unmoved by your feed of empty images?
I would take that 1 person any day……then find another 10,000 just like her.
Now we have covered the touchy-feely stuff what about the practical steps to creating content?
Ok, so I have covered some of the mushy stuff when it comes to creating content. But what about the how-to?
Honestly, without the mushy inner work, the how-to is worthless. How many vapid feeds do you see on socials with no personality behind them? Heaps.
Their feeds are on fleek and their hashtags are awesome but it’s all empty.
So here are 5 top tips to help you with the how to:
- Brainstorm what you are prepared to share about you, your why and your mission.
- Have a clear business plan with a clear business objective
- Organise your social media strategy around how it will help you achieve those business goals
- Have a clear content plan that supports 2 & 3 with your outcomes from 1
- Be consistent! You won’t get any results if you don’t do the work.
Kind of like losing those pesky post-Christmas kilos, they ain’t going nowhere if you don’t do the work!
But I need some serious next level game-changing help with creating content. Help me!
